The First Big Video Mashup of ‘08

by Patrick Ruffini :: March 7th, 2007 4:10 pm

A random Obama supporter scores a direct hit with this:

Very true, but ultimately a bit off key. What’s Apple, like, 5% to 10% of the market?

    It wasn’t all that long ago that candidates started to migrate a hefty portion of their outreach to voters campaigns online. At first, the neccessity was simply having a website, the Internet home of the campaign, but little else in terms of mul…

  1. Brad Levinson says:

    Hey Patrick,

    I don’t think the fact that it’s Apple is offkey — the “1984″ commercial is pretty legendary, and those of us who are past our teens are pretty familiar with it. I think that’s the problem, in itself. It loses impact because it’s so paired with “Apple” that there’s no way that the emotion from the ad can be transferred to Obama or Hillary.

    The quality of the mash-up, however, is great.

  2. Patrick Ruffini says:

    Apple=Good, Redmond=Evil is a tried and true form of digital snobbery. As a way of demonstrating your perceived superiority, it’s great. Heck, I’m very close to getting on the Mac bandwagon myself.

    At the end of the day though, a candidate has to win more votes. By that standard, the Macintosh fails. If this video represents the ethos of Obama’s grassroots, then we’re in for another festival of New Politics ™ futility as he gets chewed up and spit out by the machine like Howard Dean, Bill Bradley, Jerry Brown, Gary Hart and Gene McCarthy before him.

    The point is that if Hillary is the Old Politics, top-down, Wintel candidate, that means don’t bet against her.

    Brad Levinson says above “those of us who are past our teens are pretty familiar with (the original apple ad)”. I suspect that he may be generalizing his experiences into the general population. Remember the liberal line of astonishment after Bush first was voted into the presidency, “how could he have won, I don’t know anyone who voted for him” this came out of Hollywood of course, but I think the lesson stands. The mock ad may be effective as parody against Hillary, my initial reaction was “hey, how cute, the apple ad is being used to bash Hillary, but it had no weight. I enjoyed it, (I’m 52) and my son, just out of law school enjoyed it, but that is all it will accomplish, simple enjoyment, of course I could be generalizing my feelings into the general populace as well.

  4. MikeM says:

    Great ad, very few people are familiar with Macs (I bought one in 1985 and I am glad I now use PC’s) and with only 2 years of experience, very few people are familiar with Senator Obama.

    Who knows, maybe when people actually start to look at his inexperience they may want to let him mature a little before they plunk down their hard fought vote on an unproven, media driven, candidate.

  5. Sean P says:

    So, the message of this ad is that Hillary supporters are mindless followers of big brother/ sister, and Obama supporters are all women who wear orange Hooters shorts and tight T-shirts with no bras. An effective message, if a completely politically incoherent one.
