Reagan at Westminster
by Patrick Ruffini :: April 2nd, 2007 1:44 pmThe Anglo-Iranian crisis has occasioned the circulation of this YouTube video of President Reagan at the British Parliament, making the case for freedom during the Falklands War:
The posting interests me for a different reason. As a junior in college, I did a research project on this same speech. Eight years ago, I sat in a back room at the Reagan library and watched the tape of the speech (one of the only copies still in existence, I’m fairly confident). Now, it’s on YouTube for all to see. Talk about the “march of freedom and democracy.”
Another interesting note: this selection tracks almost perfectly with a portion of the speech handwritten by President Reagan himself. So, it’s no surprise that this was the most compelling part of the speech as delivered. I have scanned in a photocopy of President Reagan’s longhand, from the “300″ reference to the defense of Britain. Click here to see the whole thing.
