Trippi to Edwards
by Patrick Ruffini :: April 19th, 2007 5:17 pmDo I think he’ll recreate the “magic” of the Dean campaign? Probably not, but it solidifies Edwards as the candidate of the netroots.
It’s interesting to watch the evolution of the netroots in this cycle. Last time, netroots support for Howard Dean translated effortlessly into media buzz and frontrunner status. This time, Edwards seems to be their pick (albeit by a narrow margin) but he raised less than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama online.
Does this show the Internet is maturing as a political constituency? That the netroots is now only one dimension of the Internet political activist sphere? That other constituencies (say, students and African Americans for Obama) are going online and balancing out the Yearly Kos-attending netroots, who are older and overwhelmingly white?
