MA-5: Rightroots for Jim Ogonowski

by Patrick Ruffini :: September 19th, 2007 3:06 pm

There’s a special election coming up in Massachusetts’ 5th district — and make sure you’re sitting down — we have a chance at an upset.

The GOP candidate is Lt. Col. Jim Ogonowski (Ret.) and a SurveyUSA/WBZ poll out last week had him within 10 points of entrenched Democrat Niki Tsongas, widow of the late Senator and presidential candidate. That’s remarkable against someone with 100% name ID… in the current political environment… in Massachusetts!

If Jim’s name sounds familiar it’s probably because his brother John Ogonowski was the pilot of American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11th. Jim is a 28 year veteran of the Air Force and Air National Guard.

Through Rightroots, we’re kicking off a blogosphere-wide fundraising effort for Jim Ogonowski. Joining us will be two of the leaders of the Bay State’s Republican blogosphere, Hub Politics and Red Mass Group. We have an embeddable widget with YouTube videos you can use to learn more. Anyone embedding this widget or otherwise participating will be listed in my posts about this at HughHewitt.com and PatrickRuffini.com. Please leave a trackback either here or at Hugh’s to tell us if you’re in. (Obviously the sooner you do this, the better the chance you have of getting in the post while it’s high on the page.)

What better way to kick off 2008 than with a stunning upset in the land of Kennedy & Kerry? Please chip in what you can.

UPDATE: Bloggers blogging: Red Mass Group, MassRoots, Hub Politics, Blogs for Bush, The American Mind, Pain Dealer, Red County California, Kicking Over My Traces, Bob Sprowl, TV Never Sleeps, Red Mass again on RedState, and the Influence Peddler, who writes:

And because it clearly leans Democrat, a win by Ogonowski would attract a lot of attention. With few other data points to look at, analysts would have to consider the possibility that a backlash has begun against the Democratic Congress — and that Republican candidates could win in marginal — even Democrat-leaning seats. That would improve recruiting and fundraising. In that sense, a win by Ogonowski would have an enormous effect.

    Contributing to the election of Jim Ogonowski would go some ways towards making up for being unable to unseat either member of the California delegation to the United States Senate. As a conservative and a native Californian, I would smile over that.

    We’ve been excited about Ogonowski’s campaign for months now. We need everyone to turn out to help. This could really shake the timbers here in the P.R. of Massachusetts :-)
