[04.23.03] Chris Matthews, a Bigger Man Than Michael Moore The Hardball host, who has teetered awfully close to the edge of irrelevancy, now admits he was wrong in his chest-thumping attacks on the war in Iraq and particularly, about the “massive” Arab backlash it would supposedly inspire. Hey, when Nick Kristof starts admitting it too, and even calls for placing the Arab street bogeyman in frozen storage, you know the neocons are making some headway.

For Matthews, who had seemed utterly lost when commenting on terrorism and security, this is a chance for redemption. There is a Presidential campaign around the corner, after all. Here are some of his thoughts on that:

Matthews praised President Bush’s handling of the war against terrorism.

"He is simple — good simple," Matthews said. "We’ve had a lot of Democratic candidates who have been really complicated — and disasters.

"Bush is in bed by 9:30 p.m. with Laura — how’s that for a switch?"

Matthews said he doesn’t think Bush will follow in his father’s footsteps as a one-term president.

"He sticks with his deals," he said.

Matthews also pointed to suspicious fund-raising tactics of Sen. John Edwards. He said a number of paralegals in Texas who earn $25,000 wrote checks for $2,000 -- the maximum amount an individual can donate to a campaign -- to Edwards' campaign. Matthews said Edwards' trial lawyer friends would "take care" of their paralegals and called the tactics "illegal."

Don't be surprised if, some time in the future, Mr. Matthews 'admits' that he was wrong about being wrong.

I like Matthews and was frankly surprised when he came out so loudly (duh) against the regime change. He's a big guy for admitting so soon after the war that he was wrong. Let's give him credit for that.

As for Michael Moore apologizing, don't hold your breath.
