[05.07.03] Who's Maxing Out for Edwards? I don't have much to add to this story in the The Hill, except to say it's the best piece of investigative journalism I've seen in a while.

You regard Edwards as a threat, don't you?

ABC's The Note downplayed this story today. Maybe they know that the Bush 2000 contributor lists might yield a few "reimbursed" employees as well...

Oh puh-leeze. Exhale Trista, come back down to earth. For most of America, a good 90% of it at least, network news, and that is inclusive of all web-news-blog services associated with network news, are basically liberal echo chambers.

So ABC's The Note downplayed the story. I bet the NY Times buried it and WaPo probably put it back near the obits, what's your point? Are they all in on some grand corporate news conspiracy to keep Dubya in power? Really, if anyone associated with big media thought they could nail Dubya on something similar to this they would and it wouldn't get down played, nope, front page, prime time news all the way.

As for Edwards being a threat, sorry. I don't think of him as a threat, joke yes, threat no. It'll take more than an empty suit and nice hair to beat Dubya. Besides Eddie has a real problem if he does get successful and its name is Bill Clinton. See the prospect of a slick southern trial lawyer running against George W. Bush? The media would say its '92 all over again. The "Big Me" would become the instant center of attention and Eddie would find himself linked in voters minds with the Bubba. In 2000 that may not have been political suicide but in post 9/11 America Bubba is an albatross, pure and simple.

Nope the real threat in this race is Kerry. He's got the money to go the distance, his only real weakness is his naked political opportunism is so transparent that even non-primary voters can see through him.

Does anyone read instructions? Don't click "post" twice....sheesh.

I still tend to think Gephardt is the threat. His health plan will appeal to the left of center primary voters and his post 911 hawkishness may serve him well in a general election. This would only win him the presidency if there were suburban souplines and homeless soccermoms come November '04. Otherwise, Dubya is unbeatable. Thank goodness. --s

I swear I didn't press it twice...what's up with that...now I'm like, embarrassed and sh&*. Get it fixed Patrick! :-)

Well, it doesn't matter if Edwards is a threat or not - if big donors are giving under multiple names it's illegal! And don't tell me for one minute that if any big media firm had a sniff that this was happening with Bush or a prominent Republican (McCain would provide some irony) that this would not be BIG NEWS. (Heck I can see Peter Jenning's smarmy smile while reporting it in my mind's eye already.)

The point is, this will come back to haunt Edwards. And I'm guessing that -- if Edwards gets on a streak -- it'll be his Democratic Primary rivals who'll FIRST bring it back to news. (Remember, Al Gore first brought up "Willie Horton" in trying to get past Mike Dukakis.)

I've suggested the reporters from The Hill take a look at the contributions to the Edwards 1998 senatorial campaign. Almost 50% ($900,000) of his contributions from individuals came from lawyers or law firm employees. Once is a mistake - two times makes a pattern.

gephardt is bigger threat than edwards. edwards will be lucky to retain his senate seat in 04. he'd better hope he gets bounced early so he can focus on shoring up his flagging support in caolina
