[05.16.03] The Virtuous Circle
Here's Blaster, on what it'll take to win in '04:
No "message." You need to to defend our nation. You need to want to defend our nation. You have to feel like our nation deserves to be defended. That isn't a message. Its a belief. And if you don't believe those things, your message can't be credible, no matter how good you are at faking sincerity.
I like the way the man thinks.

Is this thinking? Or is it just kneejerk nationalism? Any idiot could say what you've quoted, and has. So what, you think there are a whole slew of candidates out there who are arguing that America should frequently be attacked? Sheesh. Posted by: Thersites at May 19, 2003 02:50:27 AM
To answer Thersites, it means that Americans have to feel in their gut that the next president is deeply committed to national defense. No amount of clever speechmaking is going to convince them if they don't feel that comfort level. And, frankly, charges of "nationalism" betray a deep misunderstanding of this issue. National defense is not an intellectual construct, it's an issue of trust. Posted by: JB at May 20, 2003 02:23:36 AM
Under the category of "liberals who don't get that 9/11 changed this country permanently" I give you: Thersites. He's not alone, just not in the majority. Posted by: Mike the Analyst at May 20, 2003 03:08:17 PM
